Welcome to Geeks without Borders

Spammer alert
Sorry but there have been some socially unacceptable joining, so I turned on the "Approve Members" bit. For those who got spammed, my apologies.
James.

Geeks Without Borders is a social network of concerned people, who realize the potential and promise of technology. For us living in the technologically rich areas of the world, we often take what we have for granted. Consider though, how what we have would benefit and improve the lives of those living in areas where the dream of technology is just that - a dream.

Think about what you could do to help. Perhaps spend an hour a week writing a tutorial on how to build a web page, or describing the basics of networking. Come up with a unique way to teach a technical subject to someone who is halfway around the world. Collect outdated (but not obsolete) hardware that can easily be refurbished and redistributed. Learn what the technology is like for those in the areas we serve. Influence people to support what we are doing by providing shipping and travel expenses.

Spread the word! Join the cause! You'll feel good.

Or would you just like to donate now for shipping items to where they are needed? Click the Donate Now button on the left.

Current Projects

Computer Lab at La Medalla Milagrosa (Girl School) - Santa Ana, El Salvador

La Medalla Milagrosa is a girl school in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Their computer "lab" consists of ancient 486 and Pentium I computers. We are currently collecting late model hardware to ship to them so they can upgrade their lab. We are currently working with Microsoft on providing current operating systems and Office to teach these girls skills to get better jobs in Central America.

Zambian .NET User's Group

We are currently supporting the first .NET User's Group in Zambia, Africa. Run by a passionate leader, Mwansa, they are diligently working on learning all things SQL and .NET. However several problems haunt this effort. First, think of where the United States was technologically 20 years ago with dial up connections. This is the IT infrastructure now in Zambia. Secondly shipping items into Zambia is "expensive" as the "import taxes" are different (set by the different political factions at the border). MCT certified trainers go into Zambia several times a year, and take materials in via their luggage. We pay the extra fees required for this.
